About this event

  • Event lasts 3 hours 45 minutes

The Vinnies QLD VoRTCS program provides a free quality in-home service which delivers English-based tutoring and community advice for refugee families to help them in their settlement journey and in developing their independence. By promoting learning through language in a way which helps refugees to function more independently, we hope they will be able to take up the educational, social and vocational opportunities to meet their needs. Volunteer tutor teams (in teams of 2-3 tutors) help family members with their English, their knowledge about how our community works, and developing independence in 10 key focus areas pertaining to settlement.

Face-to-Face Volunteer Induction Training The first part of the morning is focused on explaining the volunteer role, who our families are and how they are referred to VoRTCS, how we provide support to families from a refugee background and all the important information needed to decide if the volunteer tutor role is right for you. We have a short break for morning tea where you can choose to leave (no questions asked) if the role isn’t for you or continue onto the second half if you’re ready to become a VoRTCS Tutor! The second part of the training focuses on the different techniques, approaches, and situations that our families often ask for help with. We will also look at the different learning levels, how to assess their ‘tutoring needs’ and putting together goals and session plans. Our wonderful volunteer training team will be there on the day to answer your questions and explain the ‘ins-and-outs’ of all that we do.

We look forward to seeing you soon and welcoming you on board the VoRTCS team!

Organised by

VoRTCS, a State Program of St Vincent de Paul Society Queensland, is driven by the belief that everyone should feel welcome and a part of the community. VoRTCS is a refugee support program that links volunteer teams (in groups of 3 or more tutors) with refugee families for weekly home visits. These regular weekly sessions develop English language skills, provide information about their local area and assist families to feel they are a part of their new community. Our volunteers find it’s a rewarding experience to form connections with a vibrant and diverse cultural group and see their family successfully adapt to life in Australia.

Our goal is to assist all members of the family to settle into life in Australia, to build community links, and empower them to be able to access every opportunity available to all Australians.

We do not require our volunteers to be experienced tutors or qualified teachers. Rather, we are looking for individuals who feel strongly about helping others, recognise the value in everyone working together and are able to dedicate approximately 90 minutes per week to their tutor group and family.
