Come learn how to fix a flat tyre on your bicycle in this free 1-hour class and never be put out by a flat tyre again!
We are a 100% volunteer collective of all ages, genders and backgrounds passionate about teaching people like you the essential skills you need to get on your bike and stay on it. Knowing how to fix a flat yourself will save you money, time and fuss, keep your bike operational and save otherwise perfectly useful rubber from being sent to landfill. We'll cover:
- how to take off your wheels
- what can cause a flat, and how to avoid the common range of culprits
- how to remove a flat inner tube and change it for a new one
- how to properly repair a punctured inner tube so it's as good as new!
No need to worry if you don't even need to know what an inner tube is - this is a friendly, welcoming, judgement-free learning space, no previous experience with bicycle maintenance or repair is required.
This is a hands on class where we'll talk you through the steps with diagrams and demonstrations, and you'll get to do it all yourself on your own bicycle.
We're more than happy to give individual help - and we kindly ask you to book your spot, and inform us if you can't make it so we can organise to have enough volunteers available to help you with the hands on tasks. The class size is set to a maximum of 15 participants.
The class runs from 10 a.m at the St Kilda Library Community Room, which you'll find at the top of the ramp as you enter the library from Carlisle St.
Please arrive on time (or a little early!) and come inside with your bicycle so we can get right into it.
This course is a collaboration of the St Kilda Bike Kitchen, the Port Phillip Library Service and the City of Port Phillip Sustainable Transport Team.
The St Kilda Bike Kitchen is a non-profit, all-volunteer-run workshop. Our mission is to grow and support a vibrant and welcoming community, where anyone can learn to build, maintain and repair bicycles. We work to nurture ecological sustainability and personal well-being by promoting the bicycle as a fun, safe and accessible form of transportation. We want to see less bicycles gathering dust because of a flat tyre that you keep meaning to sort out, and more happy confident cyclists from all walks of life riding around!
Please note that this is a short class focused on this one skill, we are not able to help you repair any other bicycle concerns during the class - but you're welcome to find us either at one of our open workshops where we can work with you on a broader range of issues.
